If you were already running Google Groups before you came to ShiftControl, there was no way to point a Department at one. You’d create the department, and then find that the group you already had couldn’t be connected to it. The only options were letting us create a brand new group, or asking us to wire the two together by hand in the database.

Now you can link them yourself, in every place you’d expect to.

Creating a department with “Link an existing group” selected

How It Works

  • Link when you create. The create screens for Departments, Teams and Locations offer “link an existing group” right alongside “create a group for this”.
  • Link, unlink and relink afterwards. Open the detail or edit view for any Department, Team or Location and connect it to a group — or disconnect it — without deleting the group.
  • The quick-add dialog does it too. Adding a Department while you’re editing a user now gives you exactly the same choices as the full create screen. That shortcut is the one most admins actually use, and it used to be the one with fewer options.

Getting Started

  1. Open a Department, Team or Location — or start a new one.
  2. Choose link an existing group instead of creating one.
  3. Pick your group and save.

No support ticket, no database edit on our end. If we linked something manually for you in the past, it keeps working exactly as it did.
